Dear Dick,
Thanks for your invitation to the Party for Don Hay. Because of the Men for Missions cabinet meeting, I'll be in Indianapolis so I'll not be there personally, but if you'll permit me to reminisce a bit, (a privilege of old age) maybe I can contribute some to the occasion.
I first met Don in the mud of a new clearing in the area of what is now the administration building, well over ten years ago. He said, "How soon are you going to have power here for construction?" Since than that seems to be the theme of our relationship. Don building buildings, camp grounds, cabins, lodges, pump stations, at a terrific pace, than asking-"Harold, how soon can we have power here?" Don has been a prolific builder, being in charge of virtually all the construction you see here at Snow Mountain Ranch and Estes Park. But what most of you don't know and I know only too well is that most of Don's projects aren't visible to most people. You can't begin to imagine the sewer lines, water lines, telephone lines, and power lines that this man has hid under virtually every road, behind every tree and behind and under most of the buildings here. And now that he is leaving, you begin to appreciate my concern because, sooner or later, Dick will call me up and want to know "where is the power line, or how do we get power to here, and than I'll try to out-guess this construction genius. But his efforts have resulted in one of the nicest conference areas in the west.
Perhaps the most remarkable thing I've noticed about Don over the years is his ability to get things done with a minimum of fuss and racket. My experience with most construction projects is a bunch of overpaid craftsmen wondering what they are supposed to do next while the superintendent is roaring around in his pickup, shouting at someone, cursing suppliers, looking for a "concrete truck that's holding up production" or arguing with the engineer about how this is supposed to fit.
I walked in on Don's job-all was quiet and busy. Most of the men and gals were college age, summer help, but they were all doing something useful, and the project moving right along. Where was Don? - Over in the corner finishing a concrete pour, everything under control and going smoothly. He has a gift of getting things done that very few people have.
Not only do I have a construction man's respect for an excellent construction man, but as a friend you can count on to help out most any time. I've appreciated his commitment to our Great God, his finding time in his busy schedule to work on churches and projects not only for his own group, but others as well. It's friends like Don who make the frustrations of this world bearable.
Dick, you and I are much richer in this life for having known him. You know what the last thing Don said to me last Monday? "Harold, when are you going to hook up the power to that last cabin we built?"
Thanks,
Harold Miller
